Prayer Guide

A.C.T.S.

Someone once said, "We can do nothing greater than pray until we have prayed and we can do nothing greater than pray after we have prayed."

This is a guide to assist you in your prayer life.  It follows the popular acronym A.C.T.S. - Adoration and Praise, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication.  It includes an abundance of scripture references and helps to enable scripture based praying.

You have said, “Seek my face.”  My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.”  Psalm 27:8

Adoration and Praise

  • Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.  (Psalm 145:3 ESV

  • Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.  (Hebrews 13:15 ESV)

Confession

  • And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, (Isaiah 6:5 ESV)

  • [1] Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;  [2] but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.  (Isaiah 59:1-2 ESV)

  • If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. (Psalm 66:18 ESV)

  • Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. (Psalm 51:1 ESV)

  • [23] So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, [24] leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.  (Matthew 5:23-24 ESV)

Thanksgiving

  • [16] Rejoice always, [17] pray without ceasing, [18] give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.  (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV)

  • I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD. (Psalm 116:17 ESV)

Supplication

  • [7] “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. [8] For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. [9] Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? [10] Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? [11] If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:7-11 ESV)

  • [3] Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. (Jeremiah 33:3 ESV)

  • [13] Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. (John 14:13-14 ESV)
